Clear aligners have exploded in popularity over the past decade. You’ve seen the commercials. You’ve seen the ads on social media. Maybe you’ve even ordered a kit online yourself. The promise is simple. Straighten your teeth without metal braces, without wires, and without anyone noticing.
It sounds amazing, and for many patients, it truly is. But our team at Irving Park Family & Cosmetic Dentistry knows clear aligners aren’t right for everyone. And we’d rather tell you that upfront than sell you something that won’t work.

What Are Clear Aligners?
Clear aligners are custom-made, removable trays that fit over your teeth. You wear them about 20 to 22 hours a day, removing them only to eat, drink, and brush. Every week or two, you switch to a new set. Each set moves your teeth a tiny bit closer to their final position.
At our office, we offer SureSmile clear aligners. They’re a great option for many teens and adults who want a straighter smile without traditional braces. They’re nearly invisible, comfortable, and removable.
Who Makes a Great Candidate?
The best candidates for clear aligners share a few things:
- They have mild to moderate crowding or spacing issues: If your teeth are slightly crooked or you have small gaps between them, aligners can often correct that beautifully.
- They’re committed: Aligners only work if you wear them. Disciplined wearers see fantastic results. Patients who treat them like optional accessories are usually disappointed.
- They have healthy teeth and gums: If you have active gum disease or untreated decay, we need to address those issues first. Moving teeth through unhealthy gums can make things worse. So we always do a full exam before starting treatment.
Who Might Need a Different Approach?
Clear aligners have limitations. They work best for mild-to-moderate cases. If you have severe crowding, significant bite issues, or teeth that need to be rotated dramatically, traditional braces might give you a better result.
Complex bite problems are another area where aligners can struggle. Issues like a deep overbite, an underbite, or a crossbite often require the precise control that braces provide. In those cases, we’ll refer you to an orthodontist to discuss whether braces are a better fit.
We also caution patients who grind their teeth heavily. Grinding can damage aligners and interfere with treatment. If you grind, we’ll talk about a nightguard and whether aligners are still a good option for you.
Why Supervision Matters
This is where we differ from those mail-order aligner companies. With us, you won’t do this alone. You come into our Cornwallis Drive office for regular check-ins. We monitor your progress, make adjustments, and catch problems early.
We also place small tooth-colored attachments on certain teeth when needed. These attachments help the aligners grip and move teeth more effectively. Mail-order kits can’t do that. And without supervision, you might not realize your teeth aren’t tracking correctly until it’s too late.
Dr. Zamora takes special care to plan each aligner case with precision. She considers your bite, smile, and goals. The result is a treatment plan tailored specifically to you, not a generic template.
